on meeting ms. snobby mcsnooty
I was at an alumni event this weekend and had a good time. I also drank lots of margaritas, so that definitely helped.
It was an event to celebrate the incoming students from the DC Metro area and to wish them well for the new school year. Alumni and current students are invited as well, providing the perfect opportunity for networking.
When I was a student, I found it hard to just strike up a conversation with someone I didn't know. So I played the wallflower in these types of events in the past. Thankfully, the alcohol was flowing so I knew a couple of cocktails would help me open to randomites.
However, no amount of alcohol could've prepared me for my encounter with Ms. Snobby McSnooty. She and her husband approached me to talk about the local alumni group and the events we do. Their daughter was just about to start school in the Fall and they wanted to feel like a part of the Trojan family.
I went to the University of Spoiled Children, so I'm not surprised when someone acts all holier-than-thou. But I was surprised to get that act from a mother of a new student who had yet to become extensively involved with the University. I told her about how we all get together for football games when the season starts and that she and her husband should join us for a taste of the Trojan spirit.
Ms. McSnooty asked, "Where do you go?"
I replied, "Crystal City Sports Pub. It's out in Crystal City, not too far from the Metro."
With a tone of contempt, Ms. McSnooty said, "Oh, I don't know where that is." She doesn't know where Crystal City is? (If you know where National Airport is, you know where Crystal City is) Ok. I don't expect everyone to be familiar with Arlington, VA, but she said it like it was some far away country that she has been advised not to travel to. She turned to her husband and asked, "Do you know where that is?"
Mr. McSnooty (who was not snooty at all) calmly answered, "Oh yeah. I think I know."
Feeding off of Mr. McSnooty's non-snootiness, I said, "Nothing can compare to being at the games, but when you go to the game viewing parties, you get to watch 'em with a bunch of Trojans and it gets loud and fun and it's the next best thing."
Ms. McSnooty stated, "Well, I don't know where that is."
Again, I tried to explain, "I think the Pub's on 28th Street and it's just a strip of bars and restaurants and then it turns residential after two blocks. It's not too far from Rt. 1. It's 3 stories and we get the top floor to ourselves and the game is on lots of screens and it's just a great atmosphere."
Ms. McSnooty replied, "Oh, so it's...quaint." She said 'quaint' like it was some kind of disease. She went on, "Well, I still don't know where that is. If it's over the bridge, then I have no idea."
With that comment and her demeanor, I assumed she lived in Upper Georgetown somewhere. So I asked, "Where in the District do you live?"
Her husband answered, "Oh, we're not in the city. We live in Annandale."
What? Seriously? I'm not going to knock Annandale, but it's not Glover Park. And it's a hop, skip, and jump from Arlington. Also, what is this bridge she is talking about? The one she can't cross, otherwise she'll be lost?

Lizzie-- Obv. you're not cool enough to know that Annandale is the next Georgetown.
